A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that begins in your urinary
system. Your urinary system is composed of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and
urethra. Any part of your urinary system can become infected, but most infections
involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra. More than 10
million people in US alone have to look for an appropriate urinary tract infection cure every year. The symptoms of UTI
are the same for men and women: Frequent, painful urination and some difficulty
when urinating (you feel the urge to go, but are able to void only a small
amount). UTIs can be acute or chronic.
Continued
allopathic treatment by way of antibiotics runs the risk of side effects. The
bacteria can also develop a resistance to the existing antibiotics that have
been prescribed when the medication is used for a long time. As soon as a
person gets rid of one infection with antibiotics, another one sets in. This
cycle can be repeated over and over. Chinese
medicine, which has been evolving for several thousand years, does not have a
"germ theory" of disease. However, diagnosis and treatment are based
on careful observation and time-tested approaches to every type of disease and
injury. To diagnose health problems, symptoms are grouped into patterns, and
the patterns are then typically treated with acupuncture and herbal formulas.
Two common patterns of urinary tract infections are the retention and
accumulation of Damp Heat in the body, and Spleen and Kidney Deficiency. Damp
Heat accumulation can be due to the consumption of hot spicy foods, meals high
in fats and sweets, alcohol consumption, certain medications, and improper personal
hygiene. Spleen and Kidney Deficiency is based in chronic illness, aging,
pregnancy, menopause, and emotional stress. Many of the traditional Chinese
herbal formulas have very strong anti-bacterial or anti-viral properties, but
are safe enough to take over a longer period of time. As part of a urinary tract infection cure,
acupuncture can be very helpful in relieving pain during infection. A prolonged
acupuncture treatment can be quite effective in strengthening functions of the
immune system and prevent recurrent infections.
